The way we express ourselves defines how we are perceived by others. The written word holds a tremendous amount of power, and being able to wield that power to bring knowledge, understanding, and imagination where there once was none, is one of the most important things we can do as individuals to improve the human condition.

My work

I am the Science Editor and a contributing writer and photographer at Ocean Geographic Magazine (www.ogsociety.org), an internationally distributed ocean conservation publication dedicated to using stunning photography and compelling content as a catalyst for environmental education. I am also the Managing Editor of Ocean Geographic Explorers (www.ogexplorers.com), an online marine exploration resource for people of all levels of interest in our underwater realm to learn about and become part of a community of like-minded ocean lovers who want to explore, understand, and enjoy our world’s waters. I also founded Blue Ring (www.bluering.blue), an environmental advocacy B-corp that uses a membership model to create a method of ocean conservation that is fun, accessible, and affordable for everyone. Much of the work I have done as of late is in the marine science world, with extensive overlap in travel writing and photography. I am also the Secretary of Deep Hope (www.deephope.org), a non-profit dedicated to “democratizing access to the sea” by building citizen submarines capable of reaching 1000m (3,300ft).

Additionally, I am a freelance writer and editor. My writing experience includes short stories, articles, scripts, reviews, trip brochures, and a variety of web content. My rates vary according to the amount of research required of me prior to writing, but my base is $40/hour.
